August – Peridot, Sardonyx and Spinel

Peridot

The main birthstone for those born in August is Peridot, which is known for its lime green colour. Peridot is a variety of olivine. Its green colour comes from the composition of the mineral itself rather than from trace impurities as with many other gemstones. This is why this is one of few stones that only comes in one colour, though shades may vary from yellowish-green to olive to brownish-green, depending on how much iron is present.

The origin of the name is not entirely clear. But some believe it comes from the Greek word peridona, which means “giving plenty”. This might be why some believe it is associated with prosperity and good fortune. It is also said to possess healing properties that protect against nightmares and evil, ensuring peace and happiness.

Throughout history, peridot was often thought to be emerald. Therefore, some historians even believe that Cleopatra’s famed emerald collection may have actually been peridot. In addition to being an affordable present for those born in August, it is also often given as a present for 16th wedding anniversary.

Sardonyx

Those born in August have a choice from more than one gemstone, one of them being sardonyx. It consists of alternating layers of Sard and Onyx (two types of the layered mineral chalcedony), which creates a reddish zebra-striped stone with white bands. Its name roots from Sardis, which was the ancient Persian city, where the red stone was originally found, and Onyx, which mean nail or claw in Greek.

It is associated with courage, happiness and clear communication. It is believed to protect against evil. Ancient Greeks and Romans went to battle wearing sardonyx talismans engraved with images of heroes and gods. Sardonyx was also a popular stone for Roman seal and signet rings that were used to imprint wax emblems on official documents. During Renaissance times, it was associated with eloquence. Public speakers and orators wore it to aid clear thinking and communication.

Unlike rare gemstones that were historically limited to wealthy royals, sardonyx has been popular with both the elite and common people.

Spinel

The third stone for August is spinel. It comes in many different colours. Vivid red is the most desirable colour, followed by cobalt blur, bright pink and bright orange. It might also come in black, violet blue, greenish blue, greyish, pale pink, mauve, yellow or brown.

This gemstone is often assumed to be other gemstones because it tends to resemble either ruby or sapphire. Some of the most famous historical rubies have later turned out to be spinel after more in-depth inspection. However, these gemstones are not the same and spinel has a lower Mohs hardness.

It is believed to have the power of making the owner’s energy positive. It thought that it might help reduce stress and negative feelings.
