July – Ruby

The beautiful ruby is the gemstone for those born in July. Interestingly, ruby is the red variety of the mineral corundum, coloured by the element chromium. Whereas all other colours of gem-quality corundum are called sapphire, which means colour is key for ruby.

Due to its deep red colour, ruby has long been associated with the life force and vitality of blood. It is believed to amplify energy, heighten awareness, promote courage and bring success in wealth, love and battle. It is a symbol of passion, protection and prosperity. Ancient Chinese noblemen adorned their armour with rubies because they believed the gem would grant protection. They also buried rubies beneath building foundations to secure good fortune. Ancient Hindus believed that they would be reborn as emperors if they offered rubies to the god Krishna. Many cultures also admired ruby as a symbol of love and passion and therefore considered it to be a perfect wedding gem. Nowadays, it is considered to be a great gift for a 15^th or 40^th wedding anniversaries in addition to being a birthstone for July.
