February – Amethyst

The birthstone for February is Amethyst. It is a variety of quartz and it is prevalent worldwide. It is found in Brazil, Zambia, Canada and even in the United States. It is recognized by its purple colour that varies from dark plum colour to a slight hint of lavender. The colour comes from irradiation, iron impurities and the presence of trace elements. However, as with most gemstones, the colour that amethyst can come in colours other than shades of purple and it might come in blue or red. It is a durable and lasting gemstone.

This gemstone is associated with royalty and is believed to keep the wearer’s mind clear and focused. For many years, amethyst was held to be one of the most precious gemstones and even held in the same regard as the diamond, which is why it was so favoured by the royalty and clergy. It was not until the discovery of more abundant supplies of amethyst that it became a gemstone enjoyed by more than just the wealthiest buyers. Some legends say that Saint Valentine had an amethyst ring carved with an image of Cupid. Amethyst is not only the February birthstone, it is also used to celebrate the 6th and 17th year of marriage.
